For most of the messaging apps your phone runs, the default answer to “where does my chat history live” is “somewhere on another continent.” That isn’t a conspiracy. It’s the result of decisions made years ago when the default infrastructure provider was American, the regulatory frame hadn’t been written yet, and “data residency” was a phrase only enterprise sales teams used.
ChatVia is being built into a different moment.
What “data stays in India” actually means
Every message, file, photo, and metadata record sits on servers physically inside India. That’s not a regional cache that backs onto a US-East primary. That’s the primary. Backups don’t leave the country. Encryption keys live in India-resident HSMs. Search indexes are built and queried inside India. If someone asks “where is the canonical copy of this user’s conversation,” the answer is a specific data centre, and that data centre is in India.
This costs more than the default. It’s worth it.
Why it costs more, and why it matters
The default messaging infrastructure on the global internet is American-hosted. Switching off it means:
- Negotiating with Indian colocation and cloud providers whose pricing is, on average, higher than the global hyperscalers.
- Operating under a regulatory regime (the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP)) that is still settling, where the conservative reading of obligations is the only safe one.
- Building network and CDN layers around India-first geography, instead of US-first geography with India as a fallback.
The reason it’s worth it isn’t sentimental. It’s structural.
For an Indian user, India-resident data is faster (shorter round-trip times to the nearest replica). For an Indian business, India-resident data is a compliance answer that’s increasingly being asked. For everyone, it’s the difference between your conversations sitting under your country’s legal framework or someone else’s.
What it doesn’t mean
A few things “in India” explicitly does not mean:
- It does not mean every legal request gets honoured. “India-resident” governs the legal frame in which any request is evaluated.
- Today, message data is encrypted at rest but ChatVia operators retain technical access to message contents for incident response. The full end-to-end encryption model, where the ciphertext we store is unreadable even to us, ships at v1.0 alongside a third-party audit. We’d rather name the gap honestly than claim a stronger posture today than the code currently supports.
- It does not mean ChatVia is for India only. The product is for anyone who wants their conversations kept; the infrastructure is in India by choice, not for exclusion.
Why now
The DPDP Act is the inflection point most people on the consumer side haven’t fully felt yet, but every Indian SMB compliance officer is suddenly thinking about. “Where does our customer support history live” and “where does our team chat live” are questions that have straightforward answers if the chat tool was built around them, and extremely awkward answers if the chat tool was built somewhere else.
ChatVia is being built so the answer is the easy one.
That’s the whole policy.
